Latest Metroid Dread Teaser Reveals New Villain

Nintendo finally announced that it will release Metroid Dread on October 8th, 2021. This is a long-awaited release with a lot of history dating 15 years ago when initial development started. However, the game was canceled but later reinstated after the success of Metroid: Samus Returns in 2017. Yoshio Sakamoto, the long-time producer, tasked MercurySteam to revive the sequel.

Since the E3 announcement, Nintendo has been releasing several trailers that have created lots of hype in the air. Each trailer showcases a new and exciting feature or character that makes fans go wild. The latest teaser(Volume 6) introduces a new scary birdlike villain with an arm cannon of its own. It looks like a general of the Chozo race that appeared in Metroid: Samus Returns.

What we know about the new Metroid Dread Villain

The new Metroid dread villain has been dubbed the ‘Chozo General’ by fans. It belongs to the Chozo race of planet ZDR where Samus has just landed. According to Nintendo, the Chozo race is peaceful and mild-mannered. But the Existence of Chozo Warriors depicts otherwise. Hints from the previous seasons show that the warriors might be behind the ending of the Chozo civilization.

In the past, the Chozo Aliens were renowned for their powerful military and intelligence. So Samus is going to face a hard time going past the warriors, stubborn E.M.M.I bots and defeating the Chozo general. If you were waiting for a powerful villain to challenge then this is it. Everyone is hyped and counting days to the actual release.

This race was plentiful and peaceful at first but nowadays it's rarely seen. There is no clear reason why it's attacking Samus as she lands on the ZDR planet. Since they do not like being in the limelight it shows that there must be a good reason behind the attack. I guess we will find out once the game hits the market.

Facing the Chozo general and the warriors will be a tough challenge. Luckily, the developers have improved Samus’s suit and her abilities from the last release. These are some of the abilities highlighted in the latest teaser. Some abilities have been improved from the 2017 game Metroid:Samus returns while others are brand new.

  • Ice Missiles:Samus can destroy enemies by firing missiles with a freezing effect.

  • Storm Missiles: This allows Samus to lock and fire multiple missiles at once using the free aim. You can fire a maximum of 5 times.

  • Melee Counter: You can use the melee counter to deflect the enemy attacks.

  • Speed Booster: This upgrade allows Samus to smash through objects on her path

  • Automatic Morphball abilities: Samus can squeeze through the small gaps easily that you cant pass through sliding.

  • Screw attack: This occurs during a spin jump where Samus covers with a powerful mass of energy that can shatter obstacles or damage enemies.

  • Cross Bomb: A powerful bomb that can explode in 4 directions.

  • Shinespark: When in a speed booster state, Samus can send herself flying in any direction

Some fans are not happy with the Spoilers

So far Nintendo has released several trailers highlighting some of the bests scenes of the game. Some fans think that Nintendo is revealing too much info and there might be no surprises left for them to explore. A user in a reply to the Nintendo trailer said that he is going to mute them because they are spoiling the whole game.

“Gonna go ahead and mute Nintendo. I get this game needs to sell, but spoiling the whole game ain't it”

Final Thoughts

If you are a 2D side scroll game fan then this is for you. Nothing can beat the feeling of playing a retro game with a storyline. It makes you feel like part of a movie series. Nintendo has released so many teasers ahead of the actual release. The latest trailer focuses on the new Villain and Samus’s new abilities. Nintendo describes the Chozo General as one of the most powerful villains of the sequel.
