Among Us Guide for Parents

What looks to be official artwork from Inner Sloth games for their hit game: Among Us

You've probably overheard your tween or teen mention playing the online multiplayer videogame Among Us with their friends if they're bored at home. While it has been playable since 2018, the COVID-19 pandemic prompted people to meet with friends online rather than in person, which caused the popularity of Among Us to soar.

Parents are surely thinking if their children should play Among Us in light of this. Are there any things your children should avoid seeing or learning? This guide provides all the information parents may need about this well-liked online murder-mystery game, whether your child is asking permission to participate or has been playing it for some time.

What is Among Us?

Players in the online cooperative game Among Us from InnerSloth must cooperate to repair their deteriorating spaceship while identifying the imposters. It's a social deduction game, which implies that the conflict between the informed few and the misinformed majority is at the center of the game's plot. Although it may seem difficult, the idea is actually quite straightforward.

You are given the role of the villain (also known as the Imposter) or the hero at random at the beginning of each game (also known as Crewmate). The Crewmates are unaware of the role that each player was given, but the Imposters are aware of it.

Imposters need to eliminate all Crewmates without being discovered in order to win. To win, the Crewmates must either identify the Imposters and vote them off the ship or complete the ship's repairs by performing little jobs before the Imposters can kill everyone.

The one caveat is that communication between players is only permitted during emergency meetings, which may only be called when a Crewmate's body has been discovered and reported or when someone pushes the emergency meeting button.

Players gather for a meeting where they discuss what they've observed and decide whether to eliminate a suspect player or move on without one. Players must use reasoning to see through the deception and make the proper decisions since Imposters will make every effort to persuade the other players that they are one of the good guys.

Is this a violent game?

You might decide that this game is inappropriate for your children after hearing the words "murder" and "kill." But in reality, this game is really easy for the most part. In the game, there is no discernible blood, and when a player discovers the death of another player, the cartoonish artwork makes it appear more like a vibrant honey-baked ham than a body.

Take note of the somewhat surprising kill animations that appear when you are killed by an Imposter. These depict some rather graphic violence, such as being shot with a gun, having your neck snapped, and being stabbed with a knife or an alien's sharp tongue.

Despite the fact that each scene just lasts for a couple of seconds on screen, they aren't frequently displayed. Since the kill animations are only displayed when a Crewmate is killed, even though you're probably a Crewmate majority of the time, you'll only see them once every game.

You won't see any kill sequences if you're an imposter. Rather, the victim's character just transforms into that "honey-baked ham" and falls to the ground when you accomplish a kill—which, based on your level of ability, is much easier said than done.
